A sunny refreshing experience in the heart of Edinburgh’s old town

It is with great sadness that Always Sunday closed in March 2012, after nearly 9 years of being a special place of “sunshine, health and happiness” on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Unfortunately, in generally difficult economic times, the additional pressures of a looming lease termination, an enormous (backdated) rent review and big-chain coffee shops opening on either side, meant it was simply not viable to continue.

A big thank you to all our customers for your custom, loyalty and words of support and appreciation over the years.

Dunbars Close Apartment is still available as a lovely place to stay on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. It's still owned by the creator/ex-owner of Always Sunday.

For anyone looking for a great alternative independent cafe we'd love to pass on trade to Edinburgh Larder just round the corner in Blackfriars Street.  They are passionate about Scottish food & drink - http://www.edinburghlarder.co.uk   Also if you can travel a bit further afield, then Loopy Lorna's is another special and unique independent http://loopylornas.com

A trip down memory lane.........

Always Sunday appealed to all senses!  We were a bright, fresh, coffee shop and daytime eatery which opened back in 2003 to acclaim as the "best new café in Scotland!"  The List Food & Drink Guide (Edinburgh's eating out bible) consistently gave us a great, independent, review each year - and we were proud to be regularly selected for their best-in-Edinburgh "Hit List".

Situated on Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile next to the Fringe Festival Shop, we were an ideal spot to relax and refresh between the Castle and Holyrood Palace. It was lovely to hear that many people sought us out on repeat visits to Edinburgh - and talked about us to family & friends around the world!  We were also proud to have many locals as regular customers - lovely people who felt like part of the "Always Sunday family".

The Always Sunday team was always a great mix of different cultures and personalities.  Our Head Chef, JM Meny, was just amazing - his food was often praised as the best in Scotland(!) and he worked unbelievely hard with hugely good humour.  Jacek was a fantastic addition to our kitchen as KP then Assistant Chef and Grazyna's the very very special person who made our wonderful cakes for many years.  There's many many other wonderful people to remember - some staying just a short while before returning to Poland, Canada, USA, Czech Republic, France, Spain.... to refer to just a few.  The "final days" team was a particularly good one - a big big thank you and very best wishes to JM, Jacek, Grazyna, Luke, Anna, Irene, Helen, Murray, Lorena, Szymon & Daniel. Thanks to all team members over the years for the key roles that everyone played.

We've kept pictures on these pages and hope that if you experienced Always Sunday, it stays in your memory as a special place you enjoyed.

Its still possible to contact Mary Macdonald, the owner, if you have any wish to do so.

This bright addition to the Royal Mile is modern in both its contemporary design and its approach to café-style food
